First I apply the vaseline in one piece. Normally I choose to create the filler on the most extendable part. On the picture's case, I choose to make it on the leg part because they go throug the ornament just creating an extend of the leg.

On the other piece, without the vaseline, I apply the putty (basic type) direct from the tube.
There's no need to cover the entire area... just on the touch one.

On the end, the piece will be like this... don't use to much putty !!
If the gap is big, do the filler in layers. Wait one layer dry and repeat the whole process untill the gap is closed. Try to fill a big gap in one single pass will be a total mess !!
